A picture that stutters, freezes or keeps loading is the most common complaint with internet television, and in most cases the cause sits in the home network rather than the service itself. Work through these nine steps in order.
1. Check your connection speed
Run a speed test on the device you watch on and look at the download result. Roughly 8 to 10 Mb/s per device is needed for HD, and about 25 Mb/s for 4K. See what internet speed you need for IPTV for the full breakdown.
2. Use a cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi, especially the crowded 2.4 GHz band, is the most common cause of a poor picture. A cable connection or the 5 GHz band, with the router close by, is far more stable.
3. Restart the router and the device
Unplug the router for about 30 seconds, then reconnect it and wait for the lights to settle. Restart the TV, box or phone too. This clears a surprising number of temporary faults.
4. Cut other network use while you watch
Large downloads, game updates, cloud backups and video calls all compete for the same bandwidth. Pause them and see if the picture improves.
5. Try different DNS servers
Public DNS servers, such as 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, sometimes resolve stubborn connection issues. Set them in your device's or router's network settings, and revert if it makes no difference.
6. Update the app and clear its cache
An outdated app or a full cache can cause freezing. Check for an update first. On Android and Fire TV, clearing the app's cache in Settings often helps; reinstalling the app is the next step if that fails.
7. Lower the picture quality
If your connection is marginal, drop from 4K to Full HD, or choose a lower-bitrate stream where the app offers one. A stable HD picture beats a 4K one that keeps breaking up.
8. Test with your VPN switched off
A VPN adds latency and can reduce throughput, particularly at busy times. Turn it off briefly to see whether the picture improves, then try a different server if you need the VPN on.
9. Work out whether it is one channel, one device or one time of day
- One channel stutters, others are fine: the issue is likely specific to that stream.
- Everything is worse in the evening: peak-time congestion, either on your line or the provider's network.
- Only one device struggles: focus on that device's app and its connection.
When to contact support
If none of this helps, contact us with your device model, the app you are using, the channel affected, the time it happens, and your download speed test result. That detail speeds up diagnosis considerably.
